Ballynarrid Coastal Promontory Fort, Waterford

The most significant is Illaunobrick, which is also known as Danes Island. The place name Illaunobrick for the means Island of O’Bric and the nearby sea stack of Templeovrick, means church of O’Bric. The names remember an important family group, the O’Brics who were early medieval kings in southern Waterford. Today, due to erosion, Illaunobrick is very difficult to reach and is almost a sea stack. This was an area of 18th-century lead and silver mining. The mining here has left adits in the cliffs, and possible shafts in the fields identified in the geophysical surveys. This mining has destabilised the cliffs increasing the erosion.
